CLEVELAND, WI —

Dr. Joseph Walter
Թ Technical College has named Dr. Joseph (Joey) Walter its new vice president of instruction, effective June 19, 2023.
Walter is currently the dean of business, industry, and technology at Tallahassee Community College in Florida. He oversees programs focused on business and entrepreneurship, computer technology, digital media, and engineering technology and design. Prior to his work in Tallahassee, Walter was the dean of workforce education, transitional studies, and continuing education at Wenatchee Valley College in Washington. There he led efforts to create a Baccalaureate of Applied Science in both teaching and data analytics.
Before working in higher education, Walter worked for the Arkansas Department of Career Education where he led nine adult education programs.
Walter holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Arkansas, a Master of Education from the University of Arkansas, and a Doctor of Education from Arkansas State University.
“Թ is one of our nation’s premier two-year colleges, and our nationwide search resulted in a diverse pool of highly qualified candidates from all over the country. Dr. Walter set himself apart with his educational background, life experiences, and commitment to open-access colleges like ours. We look forward to Dr. Walter hitting the ground running and continuing in our tradition of academic excellence at all levels,” said Թ President Dr. Paul Carlsen.
According to Carlsen, Walter will focus on learning about Թ Technical College and the community, guide the college in its competency-based education journey, and work to scale the college’s new Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees to provide more higher education opportunities to community members.
“Thank you to Dr. Carlsen and the hiring committee for selecting me for this position. I am very excited to serve the Թ faculty, staff, and students in this role,” said Walter.
Walter was one of three final candidates emerging after an 11-member committee completed a national search to fill the role previously held by Dr. James Lemerond. After 21 years with Թ, Lemerond was named president of Bellingham Technical College in Washington. Since Lemerond’s departure, Dr. Tanya Boman has been serving as the college’s interim vice president of instruction.
“We thank Dr. Boman for leading our instructional team on an interim basis and look forward to her leading our student success team in July after Dr. Walter joins us,” said Carlsen.
